What Makes Up Your Ecommerce Shipping Cost
The carrier rate is the biggest line, but not the only one. FedEx's published information, checked in October 2026, shows how the parts fit together.
| Cost | How it works | How to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier rate | Set by service, weight and delivery zone, which comes from the origin and destination ZIP codes | Ask for a quote based on your volume |
| Billable weight | FedEx charges on dimensional weight or actual weight, whichever is greater, using a divisor of 139 | Use boxes that fit the item |
| Extra charges | FedEx lists fees such as Additional Handling, Delivery Area Surcharge, Residential Delivery Charge and Address Correction | Validate addresses and ask what a quote includes |
| Annual changes | FedEx says standard list rates will rise an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027 | Ask how your quote responds |
How Shipping Costs Affect Your Sales
Shipping does not only cost you money. It affects whether customers complete their orders. In Baymard Institute's research on why shoppers abandon checkout, excluding people who were just browsing, 40% cited extra costs being too high, including shipping, tax and fees. Another 20% said delivery was too slow, and 12% said they could not see the total order cost up front.
A lower cost per order gives you more room for fair shipping prices or free-shipping thresholds.
How Stores Set Shipping Rates for Customers
What your carrier charges you is separate from what you charge shoppers. Shopify describes three common approaches:
- Flat rates. A fixed charge that gives customers consistent, predictable pricing.
- Carrier-calculated rates. Costs pulled from carriers in real time at checkout.
- Free shipping. A no-cost option, often tied to a minimum order value.
Whichever you choose, compare it with your real cost per order. A flat rate that is too low can erase the margin on heavy or distant orders.
Choosing the Right Service Level
Our ecommerce quote form lets you pick Overnight, 2-Day, Ground or International. FedEx's published timeframes help you decide which orders need which:
- FedEx Ground delivers to business addresses Monday to Friday in 1 to 5 business days within the contiguous US.
- FedEx Home Delivery serves residential addresses, with delivery every day of the week in 1 to 5 days within the contiguous US.
Most online orders go to homes, so ask which FedEx services each level uses in your quote.
Connecting Shipping to Your Store
Unival's Shopify integration is described as letting merchants create labels and sync tracking without leaving the Shopify admin. Our shipping API connects to your platform, order management or warehouse system, and gives API access for development and testing before the integration moves into production.

- What order volume is the pricing based on?
- How are residential, heavy and oversized parcels priced?
- How does the price change when FedEx updates its rates each year?
- How do labels and tracking connect to my store?
