Who Needs Discounted DHL Rates?

International parcels have more moving parts than domestic ones. These businesses tend to gain the most from a closer look.

  • Online sellers with customers abroad

When overseas orders arrive every week, the cost of each parcel shapes whether those orders are worth taking. Compare a quote with what you pay today.

  • Small businesses with a few international accounts

A handful of regular overseas customers can add up to meaningful volume. Share your routes and parcel counts so a quote reflects them.

  • Businesses shipping to several countries

If you ship to many countries, ask how a quote prices your main routes and your occasional ones.

  • Shippers surprised by duties and taxes

DHL says duties and taxes are not included in the shipping rate. Knowing who pays them, you or your buyer, avoids surprises at delivery.

  • Senders of time-sensitive orders

DHL describes express shipping as time-definite delivery, often by the next business day depending on origin, destination and service. Shippers with urgent orders compare the services on offer.

  • Shippers who want a quote for their own routes

International prices vary by route, weight and service, so a quote for your own parcels beats any average.

How to Get Discounted DHL Rates - Step by Step

  1. List your destinations and goods

Note the countries you ship to, what you send, typical weights and box sizes, and how many parcels go out each month.

  2. Check what each destination requires

Find out whether duties and taxes apply and who will pay them. Prepare the customs paperwork that non-document goods need.

  3. Request a quote

Send your routes, parcel details and expected volume through our quote form , and say that you ship internationally.

  4. Compare like for like

Set the quote beside your current costs and, if you wish, beside the offer DHL makes to business account holders. Compare the same service, weight and destination.

  5. Ship and track

Once you start shipping, you can track a shipment online.

How DHL Express Pricing Works

DHL Express is DHL's time-definite international service. DHL says it serves more than 220 countries and territories, and names Express Worldwide and Express 12:00 as examples of the service choices. Price depends on the route, the service and the chargeable weight of the parcel.

DHL also says that any business, regardless of size, can open a DHL Express business account, with no minimum shipping volume, and that business accounts opened online get automatic discounts of up to 85% with rates that improve as shipping volume grows. DHL notes that discounts depend on shipment volume and profile, may be adjusted on 30 days' written notice, and are subject to terms and conditions. Set any quote you receive beside that offer.

Rates change every year. DHL Express announced a general average price adjustment of 5.9% for U.S. account holders, effective January 1, 2027, with a limited number of surcharges also adjusted. Ask how any quote responds to DHL's annual updates.

Customs, Duties and Taxes on International Shipments

The shipping rate is only part of the cost of sending a parcel abroad. DHL's published information, checked in October 2026, shows how customs and duties fit in.

Where International Shipping Costs Add Up

A lower rate helps, but these items often decide the final cost of a parcel:

  • Chargeable weight. DHL says carriers generally charge on the higher of volumetric weight and actual weight, and DHL Express typically uses a divisor of 5000 when sizes are in centimeters. In DHL's example, a 5 kg item in a box with a 12 kg volumetric weight is billed at 12 kg. Our guide explains dimensional weight.
  • Duties and taxes. These are charged on top of the shipping rate and are billed to the receiver unless you arrange otherwise.
  • Annual adjustments. Published rates and some surcharges change each year.
  • Speed you do not need. Faster services cost more than slower ones for orders that are not urgent.

Questions to Ask About Any DHL Rate Quote

Use the same questions with every provider, including us:

  1. Which DHL Express services does the quote cover?
  2. Does the discount apply to the base rate, to surcharges or to both?
  3. Who pays duties and taxes, and what does it cost to pay them on the buyer's behalf?
  4. How is chargeable weight worked out for my parcels?
  5. What shipping volume is the pricing based on?
  6. How does the price change when DHL updates its rates each year?
