What Amazon Buy Shipping Protects
Amazon's Fulfilled by Merchant page describes Buy Shipping as letting sellers buy and print labels, with orders then confirmed and tracked automatically. Amazon says its rates are pre-negotiated and over 31% lower on average than retail ground rates.
Amazon also ties protections to Buy Shipping labels. To qualify for A-to-z claim protection, it says sellers must buy the label through Buy Shipping, ship on time, measured at the carrier's first scan, and respond to buyer messages within 48 hours. In an Amazon forum post, a "Package didn't arrive" claim is protected when the label is bought through Buy Shipping and designated Claims Protected.
For late deliveries, Amazon says sellers with seller-fulfilled listings must maintain at least a 90% on-time delivery rate (OTDR) without promise extensions, and recommends 95% or more. OTDR protection applies when you choose labels marked OTDR Protected through Buy Shipping or Veeqo, alongside other Amazon tools.
Buy Shipping is not limited to Amazon's own rates. Amazon says sellers can connect their own carrier account to buy labels at their own pre-negotiated rates, and that they get account protection for delivery-related claims either way. Its A-to-z and SAFE-T conditions are written around Buy Shipping purchases, so check Seller Central for how they apply to connected rates.
These details come from Amazon's pages and announcements, which Amazon updates from time to time. Confirm the current rules in Seller Central.
What Changes With a Third-Party Label
Amazon's stated conditions tie its protections to Buy Shipping labels. This table sets out the difference for labels bought outside Buy Shipping, based on Amazon's published pages checked in October 2026.
| Item | Buy Shipping label | Label bought outside Buy Shipping |
|---|---|---|
| A-to-z claim protection | Available when the label is bought through Buy Shipping and the conditions are met | Not eligible under Amazon's stated conditions, so you manage claims yourself |
| Late-delivery protection | Labels marked OTDR Protected get OTDR protection | Not eligible, so you keep your own OTDR above Amazon's minimum |
| Shipment confirmation | Orders are confirmed and tracked automatically | You confirm shipment with the carrier and a valid tracking ID |
| Rates | Pre-negotiated, per Amazon | Quoted by your provider, so compare it with your Buy Shipping price |
When Your Own Labels Make Sense
Buy Shipping is a legitimate option with real benefits. Your own labels can make sense when:
- The order does not come from Amazon, because Buy Shipping protections apply to Amazon orders only.
- Your volume earns a better rate than the Buy Shipping price for your parcels.
- You want one carrier relationship and one set of rates across several sales channels.
- The order carries little claim or late-delivery risk, so the protections matter less.
Some sellers split their volume, using Buy Shipping where protection matters most and their own labels where it matters least.
Keeping Your Account Healthy With Your Own Labels
Amazon tracks order defects, late shipments, pre-fulfillment cancellations and valid tracking in Account Health. If you use your own labels, follow these points:
- Confirm shipment within your stated handling time.
- Select the carrier from Amazon's drop-down on the ship confirmation page, rather than typing it in.
- Enter the tracking ID correctly, without special characters.
- Keep your valid tracking rate at 95% or higher, which Amazon sets as the goal.
- Respond to buyer messages promptly.
Questions to Ask Before You Move Orders
Use the same questions with every provider, including us:
- How will tracking numbers reach my Amazon orders?
- Can your rates be connected to Buy Shipping as a carrier account?
- Does the discount apply to the base rate, to surcharges or to both?
- What order volume is the pricing based on?
- How are bulky, heavy and residential parcels priced?
- What happens if a parcel is late or lost?
