Why Luxury Watches Need More Than Standard Carrier Coverage
A luxury watch can be worth more than the car that delivers it, yet it fits in a small box. Carriers usually cap their liability for watches and other high-value items far below market price, and they often add extra restrictions on top.
A declared value is not the same thing as insurance. It states what you say the watch is worth, but the carrier's own limit can still decide what is paid. With full-value insurance, the declared value of the shipment is covered, up to $150,000 with Unival.
For watches, documentation protects that value. A receipt or appraisal, the serial number and clear photographs show exactly what was sent, which settles most disputes before they start.
Insured Shipping Options by Type of Watch Shipment
Different shipments carry different risks. This table shows what to focus on for each.
| Shipment | Main risk | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Sale to a buyer in another state | Disputes over condition or what was sent | Serial and reference records, photos of dial, case and caseback |
| Sale to a buyer abroad | Customs delays, value disputes | Commercial invoice with the correct value, matching declared value |
| Service or repair | Valuable watch in someone else's hands | Written receipt of condition, agreed declared value |
| Consignment | Ownership and value disputes | Itemized agreement, declared value matching it |
| Trade-in or dealer transfer | Value changing between sending and receiving | Declared value matching the invoice, signature on delivery |
Box and papers are part of a watch's value. Ship them in the same insured shipment where you can, and declare the value of the complete set.
Shipping Watches From Downtown Miami, the Design District and Bal Harbour
Downtown Miami's Seybold Building houses watchmakers alongside jewelers and engravers, and its dealers trade in Swiss timepieces and vintage watches. The Design District and Bal Harbour Shops add watch boutiques and pre-owned dealers, and antique jewelry and watch shows at the Miami Beach Convention Center bring seasonal shipments of their own.
Typical shipments from the Miami watch trade include:
- Watches sold to buyers in other states and countries
- Trade-ins and transfers between dealers
- Watches sent for service or repair
- Consigned watches moving to and from brokers
Unival is headquartered in the Los Angeles Jewelry District and insures and tracks shipments to and from Miami. Selling Watches to Buyers Abroad
Many Miami dealers sell to collectors outside the United States. Ship each sale as its own insured shipment, with a commercial invoice that shows the correct value and a clear description, including the brand, model and serial number.
Customs paperwork must match the declared value, and import rules and duties on watches vary by country, so check the requirements before you ship.
What Affects the Cost of Insured Watch Shipping?
The price has two parts: the shipping and the insurance on the declared value. A watch is small and light, so the shipping price depends mainly on the destination and delivery speed, while the insurance follows the declared value.
Signature rules and pickup arrangements are part of the service. We quote each shipment before it moves. Get a quote with the watch, its declared value, the pickup location and the destination.
How to Pack and Document a Watch for Shipping
Good records and careful packing prevent most disputes. Before you ship, check the following:
- Keep the receipt, invoice or appraisal, and the warranty card if you have one.
- Record the serial and reference numbers and photograph the dial, case, caseback and clasp.
- Make sure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down.
- Secure the bracelet or strap so it cannot scratch the case, and wrap the watch in soft cloth inside a rigid box.
- Use a plain outer box with no brand logos or mention of watches.
- Declare the full value of the complete set and make sure the recipient can sign for the delivery.
